Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

Winter & Spring Journeys

Peanuts Easter Beagle Express, April 2 - 3

Trains will depart the historic Bryson City depot at 10:30 a.m. for a 4 1/2 hour journey. Celebrate springtime aboard this festive holiday train. Passengers will join Snoopy, Lucy, Charlie Brown and Easter Bunnies for old fashioned Easter fun during the 1 hour layover at the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Confirmation Retreat Weekends

Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat center has been committed to youth since 1916. The organization offers fun and educational workshops that will challenge youth to continue their faith journey beyond the end of their Confirmation Class. Youth are about to make an exciting commitment to their local churches. The Intentional Growth Center has been sponsoring Confirmation Retreat Weekends for over 25 years. Attendees may choose among difference Confirmation weekends or on of the Mega weekends. Each Mega weekend gives a larger experience to groups of at least 600 participants. All weekends include the World Methodist Museum and the Heritage Center Museum which have the largest exhibits in the world chronicling Wesleyan history. Clear Water Contractor Training

Several development related organizations have joined together to provide training for regional contractors on the laws and best practices pertaining to sediment, erosion and storm water control. Agency representatives from the NC Divisions of Water Quality, Army Corps of Engineers and NC Geological Survey will share information on practices and tools to help address land stabilization and maintaining water quality. The eight-hour training is composed of four main modules. The Clear Water Contractor training program elevates awareness among contractors in each of the following areas: the NC Sedimentation Pollution Control Act; Best Management practices for controlling sediment and erosion; rules pertaining to stormwater and riparian buffers as well as those managed by the NC Division of Water Quality; the landslide mapping tools being developed by the NC Geological Survey; and rules and permits governed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Michael Beadle Book Signing

The Shook Museum will be hosting a book signing, March 20, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., for Author Michael Beadle, Haywood County.  This is Beadle's first Images of America book. Beadle is a poet, magazine editor and touring writer-in-residence living in Canton, North Carolina. He co-authored the bicentennial retrospective,  Haywood County: Portrait of a Mountain Community, and has published hundreds of newspaper articles on the history, arts and culture of Haywood County.

Developing a New Food Business - a two-day workshop

Sponsored by NCSU Cooperative Extension and Blue Ridge Food Ventures; and conducted by the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at NCSU. During this intensive two-day workshop participants will explore how to start a new food business (not a restaurant)  by interacting with successful producers and university personnel from across the Southeast. The workshop will focus on food businesses that process, package, and sell a variety of food and agricultural products. Workshop participants will receive reference notebooks and other materials that will help them develop their businesses. In-class exercises, and homework, will make the program even more meaningful. Workshop will be held in the Haynes Building, A-B Tech, Enka Campus. Cost $95 per person. Preregistration is required and the deadline is March 16th. Harrah's Cherokee Casino & Hotel announces its partnership with Paula Deen Enterprises and the opening in late -2010 of Paula Deen's Kitchen, the property's first new restaurant to be introduced as part of a $63 million, three-year expansion program.

 

Created as a full-service, 404-seat restaurant, Paula Deen's Kitchen at Harrah's Cherokee will serve a la carte breakfast, lunch and dinner, and will be reminiscent of the decor and ambiance of her legendary home and kitchen in Savannah. The a la carte aspect of the restaurant is a first for Paula Deen in the Harrah's brand, as her restaurant at Harrah's Tunica Casino is a traditional buffet.Adjacent to the restaurant will be a 1,800-square-foot Paula Deen retail shop offering Paula's cookbooks, spices and food items, cookware, logo wear and gifts.

 

The expansion of Harrah's Cherokee is currently the largest hospitality expansion project underway in the Southeast and one of the largest in the United State, offering the greatest number of hotel accommodations in the Carolinas. Upon completion in 2012, the 56-acre property will have added a third hotel tower incorporating luxury accommodations and high-end suites, a 3,000-seat events center, entertainment and VIP loungers, 18,000 square-foot spa, all new state-of-the-art digital poker room, Asian gaming room, a variety of new restaurant and retail outlets, and new hotel and casino parking garages. Harrah's Cherokee is also renovating its current casino facilities and doubling the size of its casino floor to 195,000 square feet while increasing video and table game capacity.

Mountain BizWorks Selected to Coach Certified Entrepreneurial Community

Mountain BizWorks, a non-for-profit organization with a mission to build economic opportunities through business development and capital, has been selected as the contractor to develop and deliver professional development for the AdvantageWest Certified Entrepreneurial Community (CEC) program.

 

AdvantageWest Economic Development Group developed the CEC program to create communities of entrepreneurial interest by promoting public and governmental awareness of the need for entrepreneurship through certifying governmental bodies and local units of governments regarding their approach, strategy, and state of readiness with respect to entrepreneurship.

 

To date, there are six CEC communities: Haywood County, Transylvania County, Watauga County, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Mitchell County, and Burke County. Polk County is pending to become the seventh community.

 

"We made a strong commitment to our CEC communities to offer continued support," stated Scott Hamilton, Advantage West's President and CEO. "We are pleased to partner with Mountain BizWorks to offer this next level." 

 
Mountain BizWorks’ role as a program resource will be to develop a customized training course to provide an introduction to coaching for entrepreneurs to members of CEC Leadership Teams in the AdvantageWest region; deliver a one-day training workshop to leadership team members from CEC communities having achieved certification; deliver a course guidebook of materials to serve as a reference after the training; and provide follow-up with CEC team members.
